Chapter 3:
Amazon Echo App Amazon Echo App In this chapter we are going to look at the Amazon Echo app (which we mentioned earlier) and online interface.
This gives you additional control of your Echo, and allows you to connect with third-party content and digital subscriptions,
review your interactions with Alexa, and more.
To use Alexa, you will need to download the Amazon Echo app (also referred to as the Alexa app).
Here are the systems which it is compatible with:
Fire OS 2.0 or higher, Android 4.0 or higher, and iOS 7.0 or higher.
You can find it at the Amazon App Store, Google Play Store, or iTunes Store – for free.
Here’s something else you might not know:
you can also interact with Alexa from your computer if you have one of these browsers:

Audiobooks
Alexa supports Audible audio books at this time.
There are four different commands you can use to listen to an audiobook:
“Alexa, play the book, {title},”
“Alexa, read {title},”
“Alexa, play the audiobook, {title}” and
“Alexa, play {title} from Audible.”
To continue listening to the last audiobook, say “Alexa, resume my book.”
You can also go forward or backward by 30 seconds by simply saying
“Alexa, go forward” or
“Alexa, go backward.”
To pause, simply say “Alexa, pause.”
You can go to a specific chapter by saying,
“Alexa, go to chapter {#}.”
To restart a chapter, say
“Alexa, restart.”
To go to the next chapter,
say “Alexa, next chapter.”
To go back to the previous chapter,
say, “Alexa, previous chapter.”
You can also set a sleep timer. Try saying,
“Alexa, set a sleep timer for {x} minutes”
or “Alexa, set a sleep timer for {x} hours.”
You can also say,
“Alexa, stop reading the book in {x} minutes”
or “Alexa, stop reading the book in {x} hours.”
You can cancel your sleep timer very easily:
“Alexa, cancel sleep timer.”
Currently, Alexa doesn’t support narration speed control, badges and stats, bookmarks, notes, or newspaper and magazine audio subscriptions.
Kindle Books
Alexa can also read eligible Kindle books.
These include Kindle books you purchased through Amazon, borrowed from the Kindle Owner’s Lending Library or Kindle Unlimited,
and books that have been shared with you in your Family Library.
She can only read books that work with text-to-speech, which means that graphic novels and comics are not supported.
To find a list of eligible books, go to the Alexa app and open up the left navigation panel.
o to Music and Books … Kindle Books … Books Alexa can Read.
To have Alexa read a Kindle book,
say, “Alexa, read my Kindle book”
or “Alexa, read my book {title}.”
Other commands that also work are
“Alexa, read {title}” or
“Alexa, play the Kindle book {title}.”
To go forward or back a paragraph, say,
“Alexa, skip forward” or
“Alexa, skip back.”
You can also say
“Alexa, next” or
“Alexa, previous.”
Alexa also supports Whispersync for Voice.
In short, this means you can switch between listening to an eligible Kindle book and reading it on your Kindle, smartphone, or tablet – and vice versa.
You can listen to it via Alexa, then a few hours later when you are away from the house you can pick up where you left off on your Kindle.

Chapter 5: Alexa and Information Alexa can help you track down all kinds of information,
without ever having to type in a single thing or open your browser.
In this chapter, we will look at various types of information and the commands you need to use.
Words She will spell words for you:
“Alexa, how do you spell {word}?”
She will also define them for you:
“Alexa, what is the definition of {word}?”
Holidays If you want to know when a certain holiday is coming,
ask Alexa: “Alexa, when is {name of holiday}?” to get the date and day of the week.
Geography She is also well versed in geography, such as the distance between locations, elevation, and latitude and longitude:
"Alexa, what is the distance between {location} and {location}?"
"Alexa, what is the elevation of {location}?"
"Alexa, what is the latitude and longitude of {location}?"
She also knows information about countries, states, and cities.
"Alexa, what is the capital of {location}?"
"Alexa, which {states/ countries} border {location}?"
Math
Alexa is good with math, including addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, square roots, powers, and factorials.
She only accepts one command at a time, so you can’t do something like 2 + 2 + 2.
“Alexa, what is {number} + {number}?”
She can also do unit conversions, but only if they make sense.
Don’t try to convert ounces to inches.
“Alexa, how many {units} are in a {unit}?” or
“Alexa, how many {units} are in {number} {units}?”
Trivia
She is also an excellent source of trivia information about movies, television shows, songs, history and more.
“Alexa, what year did {movie title} come out?”
“Alexa, who starred in the movie {movie title}?”
“Alexa, what is {actor}’ s latest {movie/ television show}?”
“Alexa, who stars in {title}?”
“Alexa, who played {character} in the movie {movie title}?”
“Alexa, what is the IMDB rating for {title}?”
“Alexa, who is {name}?”
(Note: this works well for titles, like
“Who is the prime minister of England?”)
“Alexa, who sings the song {song title}?”
“Alexa, who is in the band {name of band}?”
"Alexa, what year did {name of band} release {song/ album title}?”
“Alexa, when did {historical event} happen?”
“Alexa, who wrote {book title}?”
Wikipedia
Alexa has access to Wikipedia, also. All you need to do is say “Wikipedia: {topic}.”
To hear more about the topic,
say “more,” “tell me more,” or “hear more.”
Sports
If you are a sports fan, Alexa can supply you with up-to-date information about games, scores, and schedules.
She can get you information on
NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, MLS, WNBA, NCAA basketball games,
NCAA FBS football, English Premier League, and more support is being added regularly.
Here are some basic commands:
“Alexa, what was the score of the {name of sports team} game?”
“Alexa, when do the {name of sports team} play next?”
“Alexa, did the {name of sports team} win?” To find out about upcoming games, you can say "Alexa, when is the next {name of sports team} game?" or
“Alexa, when do the {name of sports team} play next?”
She also provides live, in-progress score information, too. Try asking "Alexa, are the {name of sports team} winning?"
Chapter 6: Alexa as Your Personal Assistant
Alexa has specific functions that make her an excellent virtual assistant,
from assisting you with making lists,
checking your calendar,
setting alarms,
helping with time zone conversions,
news,
weather updates,
sports summaries,
movie information,
and help with finding businesses and restaurants.
In this chapter we are going to look at the commands that can help make your daily routine a little easier.
Time Zones
Alexa can also help you keep time zones straight.
Try asking “Alexa, what time is it in {city}?”
Alarms
There are three ways to set alarms with Alexa:
“Alexa, wake me up at {time}?”
(Note: if you fail to say AM or PM, Alexa will prompt you for that information)
“Alexa, Set an alarm for {time}?”
“Alexa, set an alarm for {amount of time} from now.”
When the alarm sounds, you can snooze for nine minutes by simply saying
“Alexa, snooze.”
Alexa will also tell you what alarms you have set if you say
“Alexa, what time is my alarm set for?”
To turn the alarm off when it is sounding,
say “Alexa, stop the alarm.”
To turn off an alarm that hasn’t sounded yet, say
“Alexa, cancel alarm for {Time}.”
Note that this doesn’t delete your alarm, but only turns it off.
To delete it you will need to go to the Alexa app.
Originally, alarms in Alexa would not reset automatically.
If you wanted to use an alarm again the next day, you would have needed to set it again.
That, however, has changed! For example, consider this command:
“Alexa, set a repeating alarm for weekdays at 6 AM.”
You can also choose from more than 10 different alarm tones though the Alexa app by going to Alarms.
This is also were you can control the alarm volume.
Calendars
Alexa currently supports Google calendar. That means that you can check your schedule based on what you have entered in your Google calendar.
First, here is how to connect Alexa to your Google calendar:
Go to the Alexa app and open the left navigation panel.
Go to Settings … Calendar … Link Google Calendar account.
Sign in with you Google username and password.
Follow the onscreen instructions.
Once you have done that, you can ask Alexa about your calendar.
Right now you can’t edit your calendar through Alexa, but you can find out about what you have entered.
To find out what the next item on your calendar is, say “Alexa, when is my next event?” To get a summary of your calendar, as “Alexa, what’s on my calendar?” If you have access to someone else’s calendar, you can ask “Alexa, what’s on {name of other person’s calendar} calendar?” To find out about a specific time, say “Alexa, what’s on my calendar at {time}?” or “Alexa, what’s on my calendar tomorrow at {time}?” To check on a specific day, say “Alexa, what’s on my calendar on {day}?”
Dates
Alexa can tell you how many days until a certain date.
Try “Alexa, how many days until {month} {date}?”
You can also ask how many days until a well-known holiday, like Christmas or Halloween:
“Alexa, how many days until {name of holiday}?”
Traffic
Alexa has the capability to check the traffic for your daily commute, after you have entered the information.
Here is how to get started:
Go to the Alexa app and open the left navigation panel.
Go to Settings … Traffic.
You will see a From section and a To section. Select Change address.
Next, enter a starting point in the From section and enter a destination in the To section.
You can add one stop to your route by selecting New stop.
Select Save Changes.
Now you can check the traffic using phrases like
“Alexa, how is traffic?”
“Alexa, what’s traffic like right now?” and
“Alexa, what’s my commute?” to get real-time traffic information.
Alexa will not only give you a traffic summary, but can provide an estimate of your travel time and suggest alternate routes.
Flash Briefing
Alexa offers a news summary called a Flash Briefing.
This is how to set it up:
In the Alexa app, go to the left navigation panel and select Settings.
Select Flash Briefing.
You will see a set of switches that let you choose what shows, news headlines, weather updates, etc. become part of your flash briefing.
Sources include NPR (National Public Radio), BBC, The Economist, and even TMZ for entertainment buffs.
Latest headlines from the Associate Press, and weather comes from Accuweather.
Once this is setup and you ask Alexa for a flash briefing, a card will appear with links to obtain more detail on the news stories included in your briefing.
To hear your Flash Briefing, simpy say
“Alexa, what’s my Flash Briefing?” or
“Alexa, what’s new?” or
“Alexa, what’s going on today?”
To navigate through the news items in your flash briefing, you can say
“Next” or
“Previous.”
To stop the flash briefing, say
“Cancel.”
Sports
Update Alexa can also provide you with a customized sports briefing that covers up to 15 teams from the
EPL, MLB, MLS, NBA, NCAA basketball, NCAA FBS football, NFL, NHL, and WNBA.
Here is how to set it up:
In the Alexa app,
go to the left navigation panel and select Settings.
Select Sports Update.
Type the name of the sports team in the search box,
and when it comes up select it to add it to your Sports Update.
To get your sports update, say
“Alexa, give me my Sports Update.”
Movie Showtimes
Alexa can also tell you about movies showing in your area,
once you have setup the device location information we’ve already discussed.
You can start by asking,
“Alexa, what movies are playing?” or,
if you want to check for another city, say,
“Alexa, what movies are playing in {city}?”
You can also find out what movies of a particular type are playing by asking,
“Alexa, what {genre} movies are playing?”
If you hear a title you are interested in, you can find out more about it by asking something like this:
“Alexa, tell me about the movie {movie title}.”
Once you find a movie you are interested,
here is how to find specific information about showtimes:
“Alexa, what time is {movie title} playing?”
“Alexa, when is {movie title} playing today?” “Alexa, when is {movie title} playing tomorrow?”
“Alexa, when is {movie title} playing this weekend?”
“Alexa, what movies are playing between {timeframe}?”
You can also request information for a specific theater using these commands:
“Alexa, what movies are playing at {theater name}?”
“Alexa, what are the showtimes for {movie title} playing at {theater name} in {city}?”
“Alexa, when is {movie title} playing {today, tomorrow, or this weekend} at {theater name}?”
Chapter 7: Alexa in the Kitchen While Alexa may not necessarily look a useful item for the kitchen, she can be quite helpful and her abilities are growing weekly.
We are going to look at some ways you can use Alexa in your kitchen,
including unit conversions, food facts, and timers.
Units Alexa is a master at unit conversions, which can be especially useful for cooking.
Need to know how many teaspoons are in three tablespoons?
“Alexa, how many {units} are in a {unit}?”
“Alexa how many {units} are in {number of} {units}?”
Calories and Food Facts
She also knows how many calories are in different foods.
Be warned, however, that you need to be specific or you will get quite the education on different types of foods.
For a good example, try asking her how many calories are in tuna.
She can provide a ton of facts about food beyond just calories, also.
“Alexa, how many calories are in {food}?”
Campbell’s Soup
A new feature that has recently been added to Alexa is recipe information related to Campbell’s soup by asking for recipes from Campbell’s Kitchen.
Alexa will suggest recipes based on the type soup and the weather.
You can then ask to hear a specific recipe, and even ask Alexa to email the recipe to you.
Rumor has it that Campbell’s will be expanding what Alexa provides in the near future, including many more recipes.
Timers Alexa also provides an easy to use countdown timer, which you can set by simply saying
“Alexa, set a timer for {amount of time}” or
“Alexa, set a timer for {time}.”
They can be set for up to 24 hours.
To pause a countdown timer, or resume one,
you will need to use the Alexa app.
To find out how much time is left, ask
“Alexa, how much time is left on my timer?”
To stop the timer when it is sounding, say
"Alexa, stop the timer.”
To cancel a timer, say
“Alexa, cancel the timer for {amount of time}.”
